Changes for visitors accessing our sites

To protect the health and safety of our cherished residents, we are actively screening at a single point of entry for each site and allowing essential visitors only. Day trips are also strongly discouraged.

Essential visitor restrictions minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in our community. Residents out on day trips increase the risk of inadvertently bringing the virus back into our community.

We acknowledge the inconvenience and perhaps concern this may cause visitors, family members, and friends; however, our first priority is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to residents and our health professionals who are on the frontlines delivering care.

On behalf of the entire Optima team, we want to thank our dedicated care partners for their support and commitment as we navigate these rapid changes and uncharted waters. By supporting each other, we will get through this and emerge even stronger.

What Optima Living is doing to help prevent COVID-19 in our residences

We are taking all necessary infection control precautions in our residences and offices, including implementing all recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Chief Medical Officer, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Some of these protocols include:

● Enhanced screening for the virus according to government guidelines

● Ensuring infection control and outbreak plans are in place and ready to activate

● Enhanced cleaning and sanitation, particularly of high-touch areas, in all facilities

● Ensuring adequate supplies are available in each facility in case of an outbreak

Residents and family members will continue to receive regular communication regarding COVID-19 as the situation further develops. Any resident or family member who has concerns or questions may contact their respective residence.

Unique ways to reach out and connect with residents

Before signing off, I would like to end on a bright note. Our communities located in Alberta and British Columbia are showing us what kindness and connecting can look like in the “new normal” as the world deals with COVID-19.

The granddaughters of a community member at Cottonwood Village surprised their grandpa with pictures they had coloured and posted them outside his window to give him an uplifting piece of art to look at and a reminder that family is there to support him.

It is special moments like this one that I hope gives us the inspiration to stop and think about some innovative ways we might communicate and engage with family members who are currently isolated. Group FaceTime, regular phone calls, or even going old school and writing a letter.

Let’s all do our part to stop the spread of this virus and ‘flatten the curve’; stay home if you can – wash hands regularly, and practice social distancing.
